  Known as one of the best trout streams in New England, the Androscoggin River begins in the White Mountains and ultimately flows 178 miles before joining the Kennebec River, which carries its waters into the Atlantic. The river supports brook trout, brown trout, and rainbow trout as well as landlocked salmon. Fall is an especially good time to fish for big brown trout, which are spawning this time of year. The New Hampshire portion of the Androscoggin River provides some of the best fishing and easiest access, especially the 20-mile section that is paralleled by Route 20. Androscoggin Wayside State Park offers excellent fishing access in this section. 
  
  
• Sebago Lake - 11 Park Access Rd, Casco, ME 04015
  One of the largest and best fishing lakes in Maine, Sebago Lake spans 30,510 acres and has depths greater than 300 feet. It's an excellent place to fish in every season, but fall offers some particularly good fishing opportunities, not to mention a break from summer crowds. The lake is accessible through Sebago Lake State Park, which includes a campground as well as bank access, hiking trails and boat launch facilities. Bass fishing in Sebago Lake is at its finest in early fall, with both largemouth and smallmouth bass biting along weed beds and drop-offs. Late fall brings about great action for lake trout and landlocked salmon, which are attracted to shallow water by the cooling temperatures. 
  
  
• Grand Isle, Lake Champlain - 36 E Shore S, Grand Isle, VT 05458
  Lake Champlain might just be the best bass lake in New England, and as the weather cools off in fall, the bass fishing in this 120-mile-long natural lake heats up. Some of the best fall fishing is for hefty smallmouth bass which congregate off rocky points and reefs in the Grand Isle area of the lake, and readily bite jigs, spinnerbaits, and topwater lures. Grand Isle State Park offers excellent access. Fall is also a great time to target species like steelhead, lake trout, and landlocked salmon, which usually live in very deep water but are more likely to be in shallower areas when temperatures fall. 
  
  
• Maine's South Coast - York, ME 03909
  Fall is a big time for coastal anglers along Maine's rocky beaches. This is the season when striped bass, also known as stripers or rockfish, start their southward migration along the coast. Stripers spend their summers up north in waters off northern Maine and Canada, but they all must pass by the York and Kittery areas on their way south again. The migration usually starts around the end of August and peaks in early October, with a few stragglers lingering as late as November. Anglers can cast from shore at rocky spots around York's Long Sands Beach and from the craggy point near the Nubble Lighthouse. Live mackerel are the bait of choice. 
  
  
• Upper Connecticut River - 439 River Rd, Pittsburg, NH 03592
  Way up in the northern tip of New Hampshire, the Upper Connecticut River offers some of the best trout fishing in New England, and the hills that surround it will be adorned with some of the region's best fall foliage in September and October. The best stretch is the designated trophy trout section, which begins at the dam below First Connecticut Lake and ends at the upper end of Lake Francis, flowing through Lake Francis State Park. Brown trout, brook trout, and rainbow trout all inhabit this section, and landlocked salmon also enter the river from the lake in autumn. 
  
  
• Jobs Pond - 2985 Newark Rd, West Burke, VT 05871
  Spanning just 41 acres and with depths no greater than 18 feet, Jobs Pond might seem like a small, unassuming lake in Northern Vermont. But Jobs Pond is special because it's one of relatively few wild brook trout ponds in the state, where a healthy naturally-occurring population thrives without any help from hatchery stocking. Some of the biggest wild brook trout in Vermont are caught here, and anglers typically find success by trolling spoons, spinners and streamers in parts of the lake less than 10 feet deep on fall. The state operates the Jobs Pond Public Launch Site on the east side of the lake, and trout fishing remains open until October 31.

The good news is that many sustainable choices give you both benefits – they are better for the planet, and they're better for you. So, what materials and building practices qualify as sustainable? • Reclaimed Materials
  Reclaimed materials are those that have already been used at least once and are ready to be used again. For example, barn wood is a reclaimed material you can use to make a door frame, shelf, or floor. Some companies also use reclaimed copper or iron to make lights or plumbing fixtures.
  
  When you use reclaimed materials, you are reducing the demand for new materials, thereby helping to reduce the pollution released when new materials are made. You're also preventing your reclaimed materials from being hauled off to a landfill, which helps reduce waste.
  
  
• Low-VOC Products
  When it comes to paint, stain, sealer, and similar products, always look for a low-VOC or no-VOC version. VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are chemicals that are released as these products dry and cure. VOCs are not great for the planet or for your own health.
  
  Using low- or no-VOC products helps protect plants and animals, especially in nearby creeks and ponds. The quality of low- and no-VOC products has come a long way over the past few decades. These products now perform just as well – and sometimes better than – their high-VOC counterparts.
  
  
• Window Placement
  If your remodeling efforts include adding windows to a room, pay close attention to the direction those windows face. If you place windows on the south side of your home, they'll receive plenty of winter sun. The sunshine that streams in will help heat your home so your furnace does not consume as much energy. Lower energy bills are good for your wallet and for the planet.
  
  Choose your windows wisely, too. Low-e windows, which are coated with a material that reflects heat back into your space, will help you save even more money on energy. 
  
  
• Electric HVAC Systems
  Do you need a new heater? It's a good time make the switch to electric heating. Today's electric furnaces and heat pumps are energy-efficient and affordable. Plus, there are federal tax credits available for those who install them.
  
  Heat pumps are an especially sustainable choice. These appliances can heat and cool your home. You just have to flip a switch or press a button to switch from heating to cooling mode. Choose a heat pump, and you only need to purchase one HVAC appliance instead of a separate furnace and air conditioner. Using fewer materials is good for the planet.
  
  
• Insulation
  The better insulated your home is, the warmer it will stay in the winter. Well-insulated homes also stay cooler in the summer. Whenever you make improvements to your roof, attic, or wall spaces, make sure the places you touch are insulated. 
  
  Also, consider switching from standard fiberglass insulation to spray foam insulation. Spray foam can be injected into tight wall spaces, and it has a greater insulating value (R-value) than fiberglass. Plus, it's essentially waterproof and will last for decades, making it an even more sustainable choice.
  
  
• Energy Star Appliances
  Whether you're remodeling your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room, pay close attention to the appliances you choose. At the very least, make sure you purchase ones marked with the Energy Star logo. This means they have been evaluated by the U.S. Department of Energy and found to meet their energy-efficiency standards.
  
  An Energy Star appliance will use less energy over the years. There are also tax rebates available when you purchase some Energy Star appliances. You'll see water heaters, ovens, refrigerators, and even microwaves that are Energy Star certified.
  
  
• Green Flooring
  Historically, the materials used to make flooring have not always been sustainable. Many of the hardwoods used to make hardwood floors, for example, are sourced from areas where forests are dwindling. So, if you want to remodel your home as sustainably as possible, it pays to choose a more sustainable flooring material.
  
  Bamboo is an excellent choice. It can be grown quickly without pesticides. Tile made from recycled material works well, as does recycled rubber flooring.
  
  
• Smart Systems
  Smart home systems and appliances are not just made for your convenience. They are also designed to help you reduce energy use at home. You can tether many of these devices to an app that allows you to monitor your energy use.

  Located along the western edge of Maine near the New Hampshire State Line, Grafton Notch State Park offers some beautiful and easily accessible mountain scenery just off State Route 26. The park encompasses 3,129 acres around the rugged Grafton Notch, a mountain pass between Baldpate Mountain and Old Speck Mountain. The latter is the more popular hike and offers an expansive view. That said. it's considered a challenging route, with some significant elevation gain. Utilizing a section of the Appalachian Trail to reach the summit, it's a 7.4-mile out-and-back hike from the trailhead on Route 26. For an easier hike in Grafton Notch State Park, check out Mother Walker Falls. 
  
  
• Mount Cardigan - 658 Cardigan Mountain Rd, Orange, NH 03741
  Located within New Hampshire's Cardigan Mountain State Park, Mount Cardigan is a picturesque peak that gives you great bang for your buck when it comes to scenery. Though the 3.1-mile loop hike to the summit is considered moderately challenging, it's significantly easier than many of the more famous mountains in New Hampshire. Mount Cardigan's summit stands at 3,121 feet—less than half the elevation of Mount Washington—but Cardigan's bare rock summit provides stunning 360-degree views from which you can spot the White Mountains to the north and Mount Monadnock to the south. You'll get some amazing fall colors from this vantage point.
  
  
• Prospect Rock Trail - 663 Rootville Rd, Manchester, VT 05255
  There are virtually endless options for beautiful fall hikes with Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. The Prospect Rock Trail is a great option if you're looking for a relatively short hike with a great view. This 3.1-mile out-and-back trail ascends gently through Downer Glen Ravine beneath a thick canopy of leaves that provide dazzling colors in fall. The trail culminates in its namesake vista from Prospect Rock, where you can enjoy a great view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. A moderately challenging hike, the Prospect Rock Trail typically takes about 2 hours to complete, but leave yourself some extra time to linger at the top and enjoy the view.
  
  
• Jesup Path & Hemlock Path Loop - Suier de Monts Rd, Bar Harbor, ME 04609
  Although the mountains get much of the glory, Coastal Maine also offers stunning scenery and great fall foliage. You'll find some of the best views in Acadia National Park, which includes hundreds of miles of trails and carriage roads near Bar Harbor. When it comes to brilliant fall colors, one of the park's best-known hikes is the 1.5-mile loop formed by the Jesup Path and Hemlock Path. This loop traverses varied meadows and woodlands, but one of its most picturesque sections follows a series of boardwalks through a boggy white birch forest, which is simply stunning in autumn.
  
  
• Franconia Notch State Park - Daniel Webster Hwy, Lincoln, NH 03251
  Nestled in the heart of the White Mountains, Franconia Notch State Park offers some of the best fall scenery in New Hampshire, with a variety of trails for hikers of all experience levels. The Lonesome Lake Trail is one of the best options, forming a 3.0-mile loop that ascends partway up Cannon Mountain before encircling a charming mountain lake. You won't get a panoramic mountaintop view, but the lake itself is beautiful. It's considered a moderately challenging hike. For an easier trek, try the Artist's Bluff Trail, a loop of about 1.5 miles that provides a stunning view from one of the park's most photogenic overlooks with only about 500 feet of elevation gain. 
  
  
• Sweet Pond State Park - 2568-2812 Sweet Pond Rd, Guilford, VT 05301
  The aptly named Sweet Pond State Park is a hidden gem just 9 miles southwest of Brattleboro in Southern Vermont. A small and mostly undeveloped park, Sweet Pond features a 1.3-mile loop trail that circumnavigates the 18-acre pond at its center. Four overlooks provide views of the pond, where you'll have ample opportunity to photograph the brilliant foliage reflected on the calm waters. The trail in Sweet Pond State Park has no elevation gain to speak of, making this a great family hike with younger children who might not be ready to tackle a mountain just yet.

  Acadia National Park is truly an attraction for all seasons, which is why it's one of the 10 most-visited parks national parks in the country. During fall, the park's 47,000 acres explode in a breathtaking profusion of color. With 158 miles of trails and 27 miles of historic roads, pet-friendly Acadia offers endless opportunities to explore the grounds. Park Loop Road, a 27-mile drive around the east side of Mount Desert Island, provides the best access for motor vehicles. Park hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. through the end of October. • Lake Winnipesaukee 
  The sight of water usually evokes a feeling of peace and serenity. That quality makes Lake Winnipesaukee a perfect background for the colors of fall. Named for a Native American word that means "smile of the great spirit," Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest body of water in New Hampshire. At 97 miles for a round trip, there are plenty of vantage points for spectacular views. The lake's perimeter is dotted with nature preserves and small towns that cover any type of sightseeing interest. Meredith, perched on the western edge of the lake, is one of the more popular spots in the state. Head to Meredith Station and board the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad for a two-hour ride that showcases the local scenery as well as the beautiful Victorian homes of the area.

• Kancamagus Highway
  The visual delights of the Kancamagus Highway are so renowned that the route has been designated as an American Scenic Byway. Stretching 34.5 miles through New Hampshire's famous White Mountain National Forest, the Kanc has no gas stations, restaurants, or other businesses along the way, so you can truly "get away from it all." Several waterfalls, another of Mother Nature's favorite creations, can be accessed along the Kanc. Take a picnic basket and have lunch alongside Sabbaday Falls after snapping some Instagram-ready photos. While summer is still in full swing in Northern New England, crisp fall weather is right around the corner, and if you haven't started thinking about how to winterize, now is a great time for a refresher.

• Protect Your Pipes
  Frozen pipes can cause flooding when they thaw, resulting in a costly mess. If you won't be visiting your lake house until spring, turn the water off at its source and drain the water that's already in the pipes. Even if your water needs to remain on, winterize your outdoor pipes by wrapping them in insulation. If your lake house has a crawl space, make sure the vents are closed and insulated. Drain your water heater and finally, put plumbing antifreeze - not regular antifreeze - down each drain.
  
  
• Remove Food
  Leftover food can attract mice and other creatures big and small, so it should all be removed in the off-season. Even crumbs can attract them, so wipe down your cabinets and counters. If you're unplugging your refrigerator, wipe it down inside and out, and dry it thoroughly, particularly on the inside, so you don't develop a mold issue.
  
  
• Check Your Roof and Gutters
  Check your roof to make sure you don't have any damaged or missing shingles. Also, make sure your gutters aren't blocked or damaged. When water isn't allowed to flow, it can lead to leaks inside your home and make your roof more vulnerable to ice dams. If you find anything wrong, have it repaired as soon as possible so you don't return to your lake house to find a leaky roof or foundation damage.
  
  
• Reduce Possible Fire Hazards
  Unplug your electronics and appliances to reduce your chances of fire due to a lightning strike or power surge. You'll also be protecting the devices, which could be damaged by lightning or when the power comes back on. If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, remove all the ashes from inside and clean these fixtures thoroughly. As a final step, check your smoke detectors to make sure they work as intended and have fresh batteries.
  
  
• Enlist the Help of a Neighbor or Management Company
  Ask a trusted neighbor who lives at the lake year-round to drive by your home occasionally and perhaps even get out and walk around your house to make sure nothing is amiss. If your neighborhood has a management company, you can ask them to make these checks instead. • Check Your HVAC System
  Make sure your heating and air conditioning system is in good working order before winter temperatures hit. Get a professional to make any necessary repairs so you can keep your lake house warm enough to protect your pipes in the winter.
  
  
• Adjust Your Thermostat
  Don't turn your heating off completely since that could make your pipes more likely to freeze. Instead, set your thermostat to 50 to 55 degrees, which should be high enough to help prevent frozen pipes.
  
  
• Install a Chimney Cap
  If your lake house has a chimney, it can serve as an entry point for rain, snow, and debris as well as small animals that can crawl in to make a nest. Install a chimney cap if you don't already have one so you can keep your chimney secure.
  
  
• Get Rid of Dirt and Dust
  Deep clean your lake house before winter starts so when you're ready to enjoy it, you don't have to face a mess. Any stains will be easier to remove before they've set for weeks or months, and a clean home will smell fresher when you return.

  Secure any outdoor items that could become dangerously airborne during a storm.
  
  
• Use Technology To Help You
  Think about investing in a security system that alerts your smartphone if someone breaks in. You can also have a water flow sensor installed to notify you if any pipes with water in them have burst when you're gone. These types of sensors won't prevent a break-in or broken pipe, but they'll let you find out about damage quickly so you can have it fixed as soon as possible.

Sunrise visitors to Cadillac Summit Road would definitely agree that the term applies. A winding three-mile drive takes you to the highest point in Acadia National Park, with turnouts to a number of scenic outlooks along the way. In order to manage traffic on this popular road, a $6 vehicle reservation fee is required through October 22, so you won't have to fight the crowds. Vehicles must also display a park entrance pass, which is $35 per day and $70 per year. The park is open 24 hours, year-round.

The building was later converted to a gift shop, and Thunder Hole, as part of the Mount Desert Island Hiking System, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.   While Thompson Island is part of Acadia National Park, it offers dramatically different sunset views from other locations in the park. Instead of steep cliffs and rock formations, the island's landscape is made up of wide, marshy flats and tidal pools. Once called Bark Island, the spot was later renamed after Cornelius Thompson, a Revolutionary War colonel who owned the island in the 1700s. His son William established a ferry service between the island and the mainland, charging a fee of ten cents per person. There's a fork in the path where you'll find a plaque honoring Waldron Bates, who instituted the use of stone stairways and iron-rung ladders to help visitors navigate steep slopes. Purchase a day pass for $35 or an annual pass for $70 to enter the park.

Swan Lake State Park is open between Memorial Day and Labor Day from 9 a.m. - sunset. Day use fees are $5 for adults and $1 for ages 5-11.
  
  
• Popham Beach State Park - 10 Perkins Farm Ln., Phippsburg, ME 04562
  Once you see Popham Beach State Park, you'll understand why it was the most-visited state beach in 2022. Changing tides create dramatic shifts in the size of the beach area. During low tide, you can even walk out to nearby Fox Island. Lifeguards are on hand, and surfing is a popular year-round activity. Stunning views make Popham Beach a great site for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. All picnic tables and BBQ grills overlook the water as well. Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach between October 1 and March 31. Hours are 9 a.m. - sunset daily. Day use fees are $6 for adults and $1 for ages 5-11.
  
  
• Kennebunk Beaches - Kennebunk, ME 04043
  If one beach is good, three is even better. Kennebunk Beaches are linked by sidewalks that make it easy to travel between them. Gooch's Beach, the largest of the three, is often referred to as "Kennebunk Beach." Surfers can usually be found riding the waves breaking off Narragansett Point. Mother's Beach is so-called because of its family-friendly reputation. Kids love hanging out on the playground and exploring tidal pools. Appropriately, Middle Beach sits between the two. Shiny black stones and other geographic features make Middle Beach a favorite spot for artists. From June 15 until Labor Day, leashed dogs are permitted on the beaches prior to 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. No admission is required, but there is a $25 for beach parking.
  
  
• Barrett's Cove - 104 Beaucaire Ave., Camden, ME 04843
  If you're looking for a quieter getaway, head to Barrett's Cove on Megunticook Lake. This peaceful spot, with its sandy beach and breathtaking views of bordering cliffs, rarely draws the crowds found at other beaches. There's a shallow area that's perfect for kids, as well as a diving float in deeper waters for teens and adults. Pack a lunch to enjoy in the grassy area that's outfitted with picnic tables and grills. Daredevils love to try their hand at the rock-climbing facilities along the cliffs.   Visitors rave about the clean, clear waters at Pemaquid Beach Park, along with the tidy sands that are groomed each day. The park features a convenient pavilion with large changing rooms and outdoor shower towers. Left something behind at home? The onsite shop rents beach chairs, boogie boards, and umbrellas. Family-owned Mimi's at the Beach, which opened in the 1980s, serves fish tacos, lobster rolls, and other items that are perfect for beachfront dining.   While most MidCoast Maine beaches lie on the ocean or lakes, Dodge Point Preserve offers sand and pebble beaches along the Damariscotta River. Dodge Point Preserve is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.

As the name suggests, this trail takes you to the banks of Turkey Pond before sidling past the Old Orchard and looping around the side of St. Paul's school. The path is partially paved with some raised walkways to help you navigate the forest floor. The walk is extremely peaceful, offering beautiful views of the water as well as many interesting rock formations and lookout structures along the way. 
  
  
• Jim Hill Riverwalk - 2-198 Runnells Rd, Concord, NH 03303
  Perfect for a casual afternoon outing, the Jim Hill Riverwalk offers a long, leisurely stroll on mostly level ground. Traveling the full 6 km path will reward you with excellent views of the free-flowing river as you trek through the trees. You'll even get to cross the river itself on a small wooden footbridge that is sure to make you feel like a true explorer. Those with a little more time on their hands can stop by Daisy Beach, a small outcrop along the trail where you'll find a rope swing and a picnic table as well as a shallow river entrance for fishing and wading.

  If you're a seasoned hiker looking for a challenge, the Oak Hill Lower Trail might be the one for you. This is one of the more advanced trails on our list, featuring a 4.2 km loop with elevation gains of up to 140m. If you're not a confident hiker, you may want to bring a friend to make sure you stay safe and motivated on your ascent. You'll work hard to get to the highest point, but rest assured that the reward is worth it.   The Contoocook River Park Trails consist of several easy, quiet trails that run through the area near the Contoocook River. These are great trails for children to hike on, offering short but visually interesting routes with many places to stop and observe the surroundings. There are several shallow areas and fishing spots around the banks of the river, all of which are great places to scout for frogs, waterfowl, and other wildlife in the area.   The Les Clark Nature trail is a short, simple loop trail that passes next to Merrill Park and runs right next to the Merrimack River. There are even benches along the way where you can stop to watch the wading birds in the marsh or just take a short breather before moving on. The Lay of the Land

Sebago Lake is just 30 minutes from Portland and less than an hour's drive from Augusta. The lake spans nearly 29,000 acres and is over 300 feet deep, making it the deepest and second-largest lake in Maine. 

Some of Sebago Lake's shoreline is developed with private homes and communities, but a significant portion of the lakeshore is wild, densely wooded, and undeveloped. Public access is available at numerous parks, beaches, and boat ramps. 

Fish Species in Sebago Lake

Sebago Lake is a healthy two-story lake, which means that it is home to both cold-water and warm-water game fish. Some of the most common and popular species caught in Sebago Lake include: 

• Landlocked Salmon: Sebago Lake is one of the only lakes where landlocked Atlantic salmon are native. Salmon were left stranded here after the end of the last ice age when the lake was completely inundated with seawater. 
  
  
• Lake Trout: Introduced into Sebago Lake in the 1970s, lake trout have come to thrive in the lake's deep, cold waters. Trout weighing as much as 25 pounds have been caught here. Lake trout are commonly referred to as "togue" among local anglers. 
  
  
• Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass: Most common in warm, shallow parts of Sebago Lake, largemouth and smallmouth bass have been getting a lot of attention from bass fishermen in recent years. Look for largemouths around weed beds and smallmouths in rocky areas. 
  
  
• Northern Pike: Some of the largest game fish currently in Sebago Lake are northern pike, though these toothy predators are considered invasive and were most likely stocked here illegally. They're hard fighters that can top 15 pounds, and anglers are encouraged to keep any they catch. 
  
  
• Whitefish: Sebago Lake also supports a population of lake whitefish, which are usually caught using small jigs close to the bottom in deep parts of the lake. 

Best Time to Fish Sebago Lake

Sebago Lake is truly a year-round fishing lake. The best fishing for trout and salmon generally takes place in spring and fall, but anglers also catch some by trolling open water in summer or by fishing through the ice in winter. 

Ice fishing is also the most popular and effective way of catching lake whitefish, which feed close to the bottom in 30 to 60-foot depths. Smelt are targeted through the ice between December and February and also by bank fishermen on local streams during the spring smelt run. 

For warm water species like largemouth and bass, the summer months offer some of the best fishing opportunities. Bass fishing on Sebago Lake usually starts in May and continues to be excellent through September. 

Where to Fish at Sebago Lake

There are numerous places to access the water along Sebago Lake's 105-mile shoreline. The best fishing spots depend on the season and what you plan to catch, but some of the top places include: 

• Kettle Cove: A large and relatively shallow cove in the northeast corner of Sebago Lake, Kettle Cove is littered with islands, weed beds, and rocky reefs, making it one of the best bass fishing areas. It has also become a popular area to fish for pike. Kettle Cove Marina offers boat rentals and launch facilities on the cove. Ice fishing is also excellent in this area. 
  
  
• Sebago Lake State Park: Nestled at the northern tip of the lake, Sebago Lake State Park offers bank fishing access and boat launch facilities. The park is located at the point where the Songo River empties into the lake and is an especially popular fishing spot in late summer and early fall when Atlantic salmon start heading upriver to spawn. 
  
  
• Jordan Bay: This massive bay at the east side of Sebago Lake offers excellent shallow habitat for bass, as well as deep waters where lake trout thrive. This area is best fished from a boat, and access is available at the Raymond Boat Launch.
  
  
• Lower Bay: At the south end of the Lake, Lower Bay has a mostly undeveloped shoreline, and there is excellent fishing for a wide variety of fish species here. Sebago Lake Station Landing provides bank access and boat launch facilities.

Prospect was originally the 446-acre summer estate of Weeks and his family. Thanks to these lofty heights, 360-degree views are provided both inside the house and outside on the grounds. One Saturday a month, the Society conducts Family Fun Day, with activities based on different themes. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. Admission is $7 for adults. • New England Ski Museum - 135 Tramway Dr., Franconia, NH 03580
  "Skiing" and "New Hampshire" are virtually synonymous. The New England Ski Museum celebrates the popular activity so beloved by locals and tourists alike. Nearly 8,000 years of history are presented in an accessible form through the museum's permanent exhibit, "From the First Tracks to the Fall Line." One section honors Easton, NH native Bode Miller with a display of his Olympic medals and other memorabilia. About one year ago, the nonprofit organization opened a branch at 2628 White Mountain Hwy. in North Conway. Hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily from Memorial Day through the end of ski season at Cannon Mountain, which generally occurs in early April. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Runs are usually a sign that you're laying the paint on too heavily, although it can also be due to thin paint, high humidity, or cool temperatures. If you see a run develop, use the roller or your brush to spread the paint before it has a chance to dry. Once dried, runs can be resolved with a little light sanding, then repainting. To prevent runs from happening, make sure you're painting multiple thin layers rather than aiming for complete coverage with the first coat.
  
  
• Brush Marks
  Brush marks visible in the paint are the opposite problem of runs. If you can see brush marks, it means you were brushing the paint for too long, and it started to dry. Instead, use the brush to apply the paint, spread it, quickly even it out, and then move on to the next section.
  
  
• Overlap Marks
  Overlap marks in your painting happen when you paint two overlapping sections at different times, and the first section dries before you have a chance to paint the second. The result is obvious areas of overlap in the paint, also known as lap marks or picture framing. To avoid this, the experts recommend keeping a wet edge, which basically just means constantly blending as you move from the previous section to the next section.
  
  
• Bumping the Ceiling or Floor
  If you aren't paying attention, it's easy to run the paint roller too high or too low by accident. To avoid unsightly paint smears on your ceiling or floor or to prevent your roller from picking up debris from the floor, start your paint job by running the roller back and forth horizontally and making a quick demarcation zone. Just remember to work with the wet edge and blend the paint as you go along, as described above.
  
  
• Windows and Doors Painted Shut
  It's not uncommon for DIYers to find after painting that the windows and doors have accidentally been painted shut. To prevent this, be sure to do a thorough job of masking before painting and keep the window or door open until the paint is fully dry. Shutting it while the paint is still tacky will cause it to dry and stick together.
  
  
• Overspray
  Using a sprayer can make the job go much faster, but make sure you're doing it correctly, or it'll create more work than it saves. Make sure everything is taped and covered to prevent overspray from reaching it. If you're painting outside, make sure you're not doing so on a windy day, as the fine mist a sprayer creates can travel quite some distance on the breeze.
  
  
• Paint Drips or Overspray on Glass
  Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you'll find overspray on the windows later. Not to worry! This is easily cleaned up. Don't try to wipe the overspray or drips, though, as you'll just smear the paint and make a bigger mess. Instead, let the paint dry and then scrape it off the window glass using a razor blade. Since the glass is a hard surface, the razor blade will be able to peel the paint right off.
  
  
• Paint Drips or Overspray on Vinyl 
  Unfortunately, paint overspray and drips on vinyl aren't quite as easily removed as they are on glass. The same rule applies, though: Don't try to wipe up the paint but let it dry instead. When it comes time to peel it off the vinyl, skip the razor blade, which can cut the vinyl, and use your fingernail or a putty knife instead. 
  
  
• Cracked or Peeling Paint
  If the paint you've recently applied is starting to crack, blister, or peel, there was something wrong with the paint or how the paint was applied. For instance, too-thin paint or paint that dried too fast, such as in hot weather, can crack. Moisture damage underneath the paint can cause flaking and blistering. If it's the old paint that's showing these issues, you'll need to strip the paint down by scraping it and sanding the surface, and be sure to replace any moisture-damaged surfaces before repainting.

For many, gifts are an important part of holiday celebrations. Stocking stuffers, in particular, can be so much fun to give and receive. These gifts can be quite meaningful, even if they are not large or expensive. You can stuff them in a stocking or even fill a gift basket with them. If you find yourself running short on stocking stuffer ideas, consider taking a DIY approach. Here are a few DIY stocking stuffer ideas to spark your creativity.

1. Painted Pencils
   There's something refreshing about using a brand-new pencil. If that pencil has been hand-painted by someone you love, it will feel even more special. To make your own painted pencils, start with a standard orange pencil from an office supply store. Use a small paintbrush and acrylic paint to paint the pencil a solid color. Let it dry. Then, dip a toothpick in a different color of paint, and use that toothpick to make dots, streaks, or stripes on the painted pencil. Be creative, using as many or as few colors as you'd like. You can even paint the recipient's name or the phrase "happy holidays" on the pencil.

2. Scented Bath Salts
   Bath products are a common stocking stuffer, and it's pretty easy to make your own scented bath salts. Start with some unscented Epsom salts from a pharmacy. Pour about 2 cups of the salts into a large bowl. Add 20 - 30 drops of your favorite essential oil. Lavender and vanilla are both good choices. Balsam fir essential oil will give your bath salts a holiday-inspired scent. Or, you could use a blend of cinnamon and clove essential oils. Stir the salt and oils well in order to distribute the scent. Then, scoop the salt into a canning jar or other container. Tie a ribbon or bow around the jar for a seasonal touch.
   
   
3. Homemade Playdough
   Homemade playdough is the perfect stocking stuffer for kids. To make a batch, you'll need these ingredients:

• 1 cup flour
• 1/2 cup salt
• 1 cup water
• 1 tablespoon canola oil
• 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
• Food coloring
  
  Place all of the ingredients in a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Before you turn on the heat, mix the ingredients together thoroughly. Then, turn your burner on low, and heat the mixture as you stir continually. The mixture will slowly thicken and begin to look more like dough. Once the mixture comes together in a cohesive, smooth dough, turn off the heat. Turn the dough out onto a cutting board, and knead it for about 2 minutes. Then, divide the dough into four parts. Add a different color of food dye to each piece of dough. Knead the dough to distribute the color. Place your finished dough in small jars or sealed plastic containers. It will stay fresh for months as long as you keep a lid on it.

4. Homemade Candles
   Candles are a lovely stocking stuffer. They give off a glowing, soothing warmth that is perfect for winter. You can make your own candles with just wicks, jars, paraffin wax, and essential oils. Begin by placing a block of paraffin wax in a small saucepan. (You can buy this wax at most craft stores. Buy the color that appeals to you most.) Let the paraffin melt slowly over low heat. Meanwhile, cut a piece of wick that is just slightly taller than your jar is deep. Once the paraffin is completely melted, remove it from the heat and add 5 - 10 drops of your desired essential oil. Cinnamon works wonderfully here; add a drop or two of vanilla to round off the flavor. Stir well, then pour the paraffin into your jar. You may have to move the wick around a little to re-center it after the jar is full. Let the paraffin cool, which should take a few hours, and you'll have a nicely scented candle.
   
   
5. Chocolate-Covered Spoons
   Chocolate-covered spoons are wonderful for stirring hot chocolate or even coffee. To make your own, purchase some inexpensive spoons at a discount store. You'll also need some melting wafers and perhaps also some crushed candy canes or sprinkles. Pour one cup of chocolate melting wafers into a coffee mug. Microwave it on low for one minute. Stir well. If the chocolate is not completely melted, pop it back into the microwave for another 10 seconds. Stir again. Keep heating and stirring in 10-second increments. When the chocolate is fully melted, dip spoons into it, one at a time. Then, dip the spoon in the crushed candy cane or sprinkles, if desired. Place each coating spoon on a wax paper-lined baking sheet. Allow the chocolate-covered spoons to cool and harden. Then, wrap each one in some plastic wrap, and secure it with a ribbon.

The weather is getting colder, and winter will be here before you know it. Landscaping may not be the first thing you think of doing this season. But in fact, you can tackle plenty of landscaping projects in the winter months. If you recently moved into a new home and have been working to improve the landscape, you don't have to quit as winter rolls in. Here are some winter landscaping projects our real estate agents recommend for a more beautiful facade all year long.

1. Decorate With Potted Topiaries
   It's too late in the season to plant new evergreen trees in the ground. However, you can visit a garden center and purchase some potted evergreen trees that have been shaped into topiaries. Choose simple, cone-shaped topiaries for a classic look or more unique, animal-shaped topiaries for artistic and modern appeal. You can set one at each corner of your garden bed, adding greenery that lasts through the winter months.
   
   
2. String Lights on Ornamental Trees
   Are there any ornamental trees in your yard, such as crabapples? If so, consider stringing some lights through these trees. Wrap the lights around several of the larger branches, starting at the tip of the branch and working your way toward the trunk. Use white lights for a sparkling winter wonderland look. Or, use colored lights for a more lively and playful mood.
   
   
3. Put Down Fresh Mulch
   If there's no snow on the ground yet, you still have time for this tip. Purchase a few bags of wood mulch, and top off your garden beds. You only need to add another inch or two of mulch to the mulch that's already there. This will freshen up the appearance of your garden beds. It will also get your plants off to a good start in the spring. The mulch will keep the soil warmer, allowing its roots to grow longer and stronger. It will also help prevent weeds from popping up in early spring. 
   
   
4. String Garlands for Hungry Birds
   Garlands are festive and wintry. If you make them with cranberries and popcorn, they can also attract birds to your yard during the winter. When it's cold and snowy outside, you'll enjoy seeing cardinals and robins flitting about. 
   
   To make your garden, string a long piece of thread with a needle. Gather yourself a bowl of fresh cranberries and popped popcorn. Push the needle through one cranberry, then move it down the string. Add a piece of popcorn, then another cranberry, and so on. When the string is full, cut off the needle and tie a knot in the string. Hang your garland over a bush or shrub.
   
   
5. Mulch With Pinecones
   Pinecones are another wintry touch. They also are a good source of nutrition for plants as they break down. If you have a small garden bed in your yard, consider mulching it with a pile of pinecones. They'll look festive and seasonal throughout the winter, then come spring, they'll start breaking down and nourishing the plants.
   
   
6. Keep Watering When Temperatures Are Reasonable
   As long as temperatures are above freezing, you can and should keep watering your plants. This will help keep them strong and sturdy through the winter, so they come back with thicker, greener leaves in the spring. If there is a winter thaw – a period where temperatures rise for a few days – you can take advantage of this opportunity to water your plants, too.
   
   
7. Trim Damaged Branches
   Late winter is a great time to trim most shrubs and small trees. This is when insects are less active, and there are fewer fungal spores in the air that could lead to an infection.
   
   If there is a winter thaw, you can also take advantage of this time to scan your trees and shrubs for damaged, diseased, or decayed branches. Trim any less-than-healthy branches away. This way, they won't leech nutrients from the tree come spring, and they won't break off and cause damage to your home during a winter storm.
   
   
8. Put Up a Stone Barrier to Protect Against Salt
   Rock salt and other de-icing agents are not healthy for plants. If you have a garden bed close to your driveway or the road, put up a barrier of landscaping rocks. These will help keep salt out of your garden beds. Also, be careful not to apply the salt too close to your garden beds. Consider using calcium chloride rather than sodium chloride, as it is kinder to plants.
   
   
9. Keep a Plant Journal
   Once a week throughout the winter, jot down some notes about the current appearance of your plants. Which bushes have berries? Which ones lose their leaves, and when? When do bushes and plants start budding again for the spring? You'll enjoy having these notes to reference in future years.
