The holiday season will look a lot different this year, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing! Our real estate agents encourage you to maximize your yuletide festivities with these six ideas for celebrating the holidays remotely.
- 'Twas the Movie Night Before Christmas
Who doesn't love a movie night? Many video chat apps now allow you to stream a movie while in a group chat so everyone can watch it together. Pop some popcorn and settle in for a movie marathon or make it a weekly event so you can celebrate the season with friends, family, and your favorite festive films.
- Mix it Up Under the Virtual Mistletoe
One of the easiest ways to celebrate the holidays with family members, friends, or coworkers is to host a virtual party — after all, most social events boil down to eating, drinking, and being merry. You can do all three by preparing a few snacks and mixing up your favorite drink. Encourage everyone to wear festive clothing and decorate their home (or use a fun holiday-themed background). You can play games, chat, and have a socially-distant mixer that resembles the real thing.
- Set the Zoom Table
Sitting down for a holiday meal is one of the best parts of the holidays, but unfortunately, this type of group gathering may not be possible this year. Schedule a time to enjoy a holiday meal together virtually, or better yet, prepare a few dishes during a video chat. Share specific recipes with your guests ahead of time so you can cook together. Though you may be apart, being able to sit down virtually and eat the same meal will make you feel closer together.
- Gift Giving Gone Virtual
Even though we're away from those we usually celebrate the holidays with, you can still host events like Secret Santa and White Elephant activities remotely, thanks to effortless shipping options on the internet. For Secret Santa, distribute names a few weeks before the virtual gathering and ensure everyone has shipped their gift to the recipient by a certain date. For White Elephant, set a price range and have everyone purchase and wrap their gift in time for the party. Use a random generator online to determine the pecking order and use the video chat text box to keep track of who has which gift as each round commences. When everyone has picked, unwrapped, and traded all gifts, have each person mail the gift to its new recipient.
- Host Some Facetime with Santa
Santa may not be at the mall, but you can assure your kids that he has plenty of time to make a virtual house call. Gather your friends with children and schedule a virtual visit with Santa. Bake cookies, pour eggnog, and have your kids send their Christmas lists to whoever will embody the spirit of Santa. During the event, each child can take turns "sitting" on Santa's lap until it's time for the big guy to return to his workshop. As a bonus, try to get Mrs. Claus or some elves to make an appearance as well.
- Create an Outdoor Winter Wonderland
Not all holiday celebrations need to be virtual this year. Contact your HOA or neighbors and try to create a drive-thru or walk-thru winter wonderland. Ask neighbors to put up their holiday lights by a certain date so families can enjoy a festive cruise through the neighborhood.
