Clean Home Tips

Many of us are still spending more time than usual at home, which may continue for a while. If you're finding you've got time for extra cleaning projects, try to make the most of it and let your home's natural sparkle come out. Our real estate agents can always recommend cleaning tasks that homeowners may overlook when preparing a home for the market.

Here are some tips for enhanced cleaning in your home.

  1. Clean your refrigerator coils.
Your refrigerator will run better and more efficiently with clean coils. They are located either on the back of the fridge or underneath. You will probably need to pull the unit out to reach them. You may need help pulling out the refrigerator. Unplug the fridge and remove the grill if there is one. Use a soft brush and coil cleaner. Vacuum afterward.

  2. Clean dryer vents.
Dryer vents should be cleaned at least once a year to prevent lint fires. Sparks and static from the laundry can ignite the lint. Unplug the dryer and pull it out to clean off as much lint as you can. If you're handy, you may be able to take the dryer apart to clean it more thoroughly. If you need a technician to help, don't neglect this important task.

  3. Steam clean carpets and furniture.
You might think steaming carpets and furniture should be part of spring cleaning, but it doesn't have to be. Getting stains out as soon as they occur can make it easier to keep the furniture and carpets in good repair. If you have a vacuum cleaner with a beater brush (and we recommend that you acquire one), use that; otherwise, you'll have to take the rug outside, drape it on a clothesline (if you still have one!), or hedge and beat it with a broom to loosen the grit. Then steam clean the rug.

  4. Clean the windows.
Yes, this can be tricky in New England in the winter, but it's worthwhile if you have a sunny day here and there to clear the ice and dirt from the windows and let the sunshine in. Keeping the windows as clean as possible and allowing sunlight in the home will do wonders for your mood this winter. You can start this task indoors by cleaning all the interior windows, using a spray bottle with vinegar, some alcohol, and water. Glass cleaner works as well. A lint-free microfiber cloth is your best bet for wiping windows down without streaks. You can scrape ice off your outdoor windows with your ice scraper and wipe it off with the brush. Then you're ready to clean. Follow the instructions in this video for a streak-free window. And if you're using a ladder, follow safety instructions.

  5. Organize and spruce up the kitchen.
Clean out the kitchen drawers, change the shelf paper, and get rid of anything you don't use. This includes going through the plastic containers and tossing the lids or the containers without a mate into the recycling. Take a look at the range hood and vents on the stove and clean them thoroughly, degreasing as needed. Go through your pantry and throw away out of date items. Tape up open boxes or place them in plastic bags to reduce the likelihood of insect infestations. Clean shelves and replace shelf paper.

Deep cleaning your home can make it feel more livable and can boost its marketability. Contact us today for more information.
