Mason Jar Home Decor

You've just moved into your new home. Now you need to decorate it and make it your own. You don't need a lot of fancy trinkets and expensive doodads. All you really need to make your house a home is a few mason jars. With National Mason Jar Day coming up on November 30th, let's look at some of the many fun things you can do with these durable, beautiful, and versatile jars.

Bathroom Decor Ideas

  • Soap Dispensers
You can buy soap dispenser pump lids that fit onto an ordinary mason jar, in craft stores or on Amazon. Fill a jar with your favorite liquid soap, and put it in your bathroom. Not only is it colorful, but you'll know how much soap you have left at all times.

  • Candles
With a bit of wax and a wick, you can turn a mason jar into a candle. Add colorful dyes to match your decor, and even add a few drops of essential oils, to make the candles scented. Not only do they create a great, cozy aesthetic for your home, but candlemaking can be a fun and relaxing hobby.
  • Bath Salts
Much like scented candles, bath salts are also a great way to relax and de-stress. They can also relieve headaches and muscle aches, improve circulation, and even give you healthier skin. And you can mix your own in a mason jar. Combine two cups of Epsom salts with half a cup of baking soda. You can also add a quarter cup of dead sea salts. Then, add essential oils and spices, for the scent you want - you can mix and match to your own taste. Add two tablespoons of coconut or similar oil, mix it all together, and pour it into your mason jar.
  • Air Freshener
Fill a mason jar with air freshener beads, in whatever scent you like. Put some artificial flowers on top, for decoration. You can paint or otherwise cover the jar to make it opaque, if you like, or decorate it in whatever way strikes your fancy. Air fresheners typically last between three and six months. When it begins to fade, add some essential oils to the jar, put the lid on, and shake it up to refresh the scent.
  • Lights
Mason jars can make a great covering for the light fixture on your vanity mirror. Place the jar lid on the fixture, screw in the lightbulb, and put the jar over it. If you like, you can even spray the jar with frosted glass finish spray paint.

Kitchen Decor Ideas

  • Spice Shakers
Mason jars make great, decorative containers for your herbs and spices. It's particularly useful if you like to make your own custom spice blends that don't come in pre-packaged containers. You can get a lid with a spout, for pouring, or with a shaker, for sprinkling.
  • Herb Garden
With a few mason jars, you can have fresh basil, thyme, rosemary, and other herbs, right on your windowsill. Buy the herbs you like from your local plant nursery, and transplant them to jars filled with soil. Keep them in a place with plenty of sunlight, and water them regularly, and you'll have fresh herbs whenever you need them.

  • Flower Garden
Herbs aren't the only things you can grow in a mason jar. Get a few colorful flowers, plant them in the soil in your jars, and place them on a shelf, with plenty of sunlight. Now you've got a beautiful, indoor flower garden.
  • Snowglobes
This fun craft makes great decorations for the holidays, or anytime. Glue decorations to the lid gasket. It can be a single object, or a whole, miniature scene. Add a mixture of water and clear, Elmer's glue into the jar, along with some glitter, for the snow. Fill the rest of the jar with warm water, put the lid on, and hot glue it shut, to prevent leaks. Turn the jar over and watch the "snow" drift slowly to the ground.
  • Coasters
A number of the projects on this list call for just the jar, and not the lid. So what do you do with the spare lids? Turn them into coasters. Glue a piece of colorful fabric to the bottom of the lid, and you've got the perfect way to protect your desk, coffee table, and other surfaces from the rings left by unruly drinks.

Outdoors Ideas

  • Bird Feeder
Tie a mason jar with twine, to hang it. Fill the jar with birdseed, then attach a chicken feeder to the mouth. When you turn it upside down, the seed will flow into the chicken feeder. Hang your bird feeder, and wait for birds to come grab a bite to eat. As they eat up the seed, more will replace it from the upside-down mason jar.

These are just a few of the creative things you can do with mason jars, to brighten up your new home. Our real estate agents can help you find all sorts of other decorating tips to give your new house your personal touch. Contact us and let us help you find your dream home.
