It's easy to see why Acadia National Park is one of the top 10 most-visited parks in the United States, alongside places like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. With 47,000 acres of pristine natural beauty along the Atlantic coast, there's no shortage of things to do and places to explore. Travel the 45 miles of motor-free carriage roads or 158 miles of hiking trails for the best scenery. Day passes are $30 per vehicle or $15 per person. Hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. daily from May 5 through October 31.

Before air travel became accessible, people enjoyed the leisurely pace and spectacular views afforded by rail travel. Capture the romance and appeal of those days with a trip along the Conway Scenic Railroad. Start your journey at an 1874 train station, where you'll depart on a Heritage Valley Excursion or head to Crawford Notch. Dogs under 20 pounds are welcome in the coach section on any of the trains. Two of the six schooners are designated as National Landmarks after serving as active vessels during the 19th-century cargo trade. Choose from three-, four-, and five-day or weekend cruises. Museums aren't just for rainy days. Strawberry Banke Museum is a 10-acre outdoor that showcases more than 300 years of local history. Located in Puddle Dock, a historic neighborhood in downtown Portsmouth, the museum includes 32 buildings and eight heritage gardens. Costumed roleplayers, based on real residents of the neighborhood, offer a look at the life and times of their particular characters. Each of the gardens represents a specific era, such as Colonial, Victorian, and WWII. Don't miss Pickwick's at the Banke, the museum store that's a throwback to the classic general store with a touch of theater thrown in. Admission is $19 for adults and $9 for ages 5-17. Strawberry Banke is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. between May 1 and October 31.

Can't decide between an amusement park or a water park? Double your entertainment at Funtown Splashtown USA. Funtown Amusement Park has thrilling rides for all ages, including the only wooden roller coaster in Maine and New England's tallest and longest log flume. When you're ready to cool off, take a plunge down one of the slides or float in the lagoon at Splashtown Water Park. Test your skill at one of the arcades or traditional games such as Skeeball or Milk Can Toss. When you get hungry, there's always a food stand nearby. Opened in 1969, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is the only facility in Northern New England to receive accreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Get a first-hand look at coyotes, mountain lions, black bears, and other wildlife along the three-quarter-mile live animal exhibit trail. The Gordon Children's Center and Interactive Playscape provide opportunities for kids to learn as they climb through a giant spider web, listen to the sounds of nocturnal animals, and role-play a day in the life of a red squirrel. Take a cruise out on Squam Lake for some incredible views and possible sightings of loons and bald eagles. Admission is $22 for adults and $16 for ages 3-15. Cruises are priced separately.
