One way to make your new house feel like home is to decorate it for your favorite holiday - especially if that holiday is Halloween! You can put a carved pumpkin in the window or add a few cobwebs in the corners, but wouldn't it be more fun to go all out? Here are a few tips for decorating your home, inside and out, this Halloween.
- 12-Foot Skeleton
One of the most popular Halloween trends in the last few years has been the 12-foot-tall skeleton from Home Depot. Exactly what it sounds like, this larger-than-life-size figure stands in your front yard and looms over most houses. Its eyes also feature LED lights that blink creepily and are sure to draw the attention of anyone who passes by. The skeleton is a bit pricey, but if you can afford it, it's certainly a worthwhile investment for any Halloween lover.
- Changing Face Picture Frames
To add a gothic feel to your decor, many Halloween stores sell these 3D hologram photos. When viewed from one angle, they look like old-timey, black-and-white photographs. However, when you walk by them, the images change to become gruesome and macabre. One person's image may change to look like a corpse, while another becomes a vampire or a werewolf or simply reveals glowing eyes. It's a fun way to add a Halloween atmosphere to your home and creep out your guests at the same time.
- Dancing Brooms
There are several different versions of this decoration, ranging in price from moderate to expensive. The basic effect is the same for all of them, though. These battery-operated brooms are activated by touch or by sound and will come to life and glide around the floor, seemingly of their own accord. They can make a great prank for unsuspecting guests or just put on some creepy music or scary sound effects and watch them dance around the room throughout the night.
- Animatronics
There are a variety of great, life-sized animatronic figures you can use to decorate your front yard, including ghosts, witches, werewolves, scarecrows, and more. Mounted on a stand, they typically light up and sway back and forth or bob up and down while making noises that fit their characters (moaning, cackling, howling, etc.). The best models come with motion sensors. They look inanimate most of the time but spring to life whenever someone walks by.
- Ghosts
A cheaper way to have spooky figures in your yard is to buy some styrofoam mannequin heads and cover them with cheesecloth. They'll billow in the wind and have a ghostly, translucent look that's guaranteed to turn heads.
- Googly Eyes
If you're looking for decorations that are less creepy and more silly, this is a simple and fun DIY project. Go to the craft store and buy googly eyes of all different sizes. Then, find things around the house and the yard to put them on. Add them to a tree, a pole, a vase, or anything else you can find, and watch it suddenly take on a personality of its own. With a little bit of ingenuity, you can even add them to bushes or potted plants. Take a couple of avocado pits and stick the biggest googly eyes you can find on them. Then, mount them on sturdy sticks that come up to "eye level" on the plant. Stick them into the soil, and your plant will be staring back at you.
- Tombstones
A classic Halloween decoration that adds spooky charm to any home is a set of tombstones, turning your front yard into a cemetery. You can buy them pre-made, but they're not hard to make yourself. Paper bags, painted grey, can be stuffed and trimmed into the proper shapes. And the best part about making your own tombstones is you can decide what you want them to say! Let each of your family members make one for themselves and choose their own fun or ironic way to die. You can also include poems, quotes, puns, and more.
